Case Studies

SONIC Drive-In

SONIC Drive-In featured DonorsChoose.org classroom projects on their Limeades For Learning site as part of a unique community-focused campaign! SONIC customers browsed voted for their favorite classroom projects that were submitted by SONIC Teachers. Then SONIC supported the projects that received the most votes and showcased them all on LimeadesForLearning.com!

Chevron

The exciting Fuel Your School promotion is Chevron’s effort to help provide local public schools with the supplies teachers need for their classroom projects!

In September 2010, for every 8-gallon or more fill-up at Chevron stations in California's Alameda and Contra Costa Counties, Chevron will donate $1, up to $1 million, to help support public education in that city.

The Fuel Your School microsite uses our API to show the promotion's social impact stats and highlight all the supported classroom projects.

Starbucks

Starbucks customers who use the free Wi-Fi at more than 6,800 U.S. company-operated stores are greeted with the Starbucks Digital Network (SDN), an exclusive content network curated by the company and designed to enhance the customer’s in-store experience.

DonorsChoose.org is prominently featured in the My Neighborhood section of the SDN, in great company with Starbucks' other content partners such as Wall Street Journal, New York Times, AOL's Patch, FourSquare, Zagat, LinkedIn, and more.

When Starbucks customers click the DonorsChoose.org tile in the SDN, our API's "projects near me" functionality shows the customer the closest classroom projects to their location!

FEED USA + The GAP

How cool is this: folks buying FEED bags at The Gap get a free gift card to support the DonorsChoose.org classroom project of their choosing!

Using our API, all DonorsChoose.org projects teaching students about nutrition, cooking, healthy eating, etc are featured on the special FEED USA microsite.

Bing

We worked with the Bing Maps team to build the ultimate map-based UX for browsing classroom projects! (Silverlight required.)

This Map App uses our API's "bounding box" and large-result-set geo-features to load projects in the viewable map area and plot them as points using lat/long geo-tags that we supply. The "Search" tab exposes lots of project criteria filters for narrowing the projects displayed by non-geographic meta-data.

The Map App also features an "embeddable" version of the Map App that that schools, school districts, other education supporters can add to their own website. You just aim the main Map App at your area of choice and set any search criteria, then one click generates a code snippet you can drop into your site!

Take the DonorsChoose.org Map App for a test drive or read more about it at the Bing blog.

Waiting For Superman

Inspired by the DonorsChoose.org Bing Map App (above), the Bing Maps team worked with Participant Media and our API to build a map-based UX for browsing local school information and donation, mentor, and volunteer opportunities. The app integrates opportunities from Mentor Pro, Great Schools, and DonorsChoose.org.

The app also features an embeddable version so you can wear your support for K-12 teachers and students proudly on your website, and help spread the word.

NBC Universal

As part of the promotion around NBC's show School Pride, NBC is using our API to feature classroom projects on the MySchoolPride website!

The NBC team uses our API to feature high-need projects on their MySchoolPride sub-site, and also enable in-line keyword searching and browsing of classroom projects. Wow!

NCAA

The NCAA partnered with DonorsChoose.org for the NCAA's "Fund the Future" campaign (www.ncaa.org/fundthefuture) in support of K-12 school districts around the country.

The campaign was supported by public service announcements aired on TV during the NCAA championships of March 2011, including the NCAA Division I Men’s and Women’s Basketball Championships!

PayPal

PayPal generously encouraged their customers to help support DonorsChoose.org classroom projects on their Back-To-School Shopping site!

Since a picture--even an embarrassingly lo-fi one--is worth a thousand words, here's a screenshot:

Cash4Books.net

Cash4Books has for years been enabling its customers to allocate a portion of the cash they receive for their books in support of classroom projects.

By plugging into our API's transactional functionality, Cash4Books customers now receive a DonorsChoose.org gift card for the precise denomination of their donation and can hand-pick the classroom project themselves!

EveryBlock

If you enjoy using EveryBlock to follow neighborhood news and connect with neighbors in 16 U.S. cities, you can also see local classroom needs!

EveryBlock subscribers will see local classroom projects on their EveryBlock homepage and in e-mails, and they’ll be updated when a teacher in their area has posted a new project.

BetterLabs

The good folks at
BetterLabs used our API to build some sweet notification functionality! Users specify the types of projects they care about, then DCAlerts
will send them email alerts when relevant new projects are posted.

Similarly DCTweets will automatically Tweet from the end-user's Twitter account when projects matching the criteria they care about are posted, to help them garner more attention from prospective donors. Very cool.

Social Actions

The Social Actions team built a WordPress plugin that enables bloggers to promote relevant classroom projects from DonorsChoose.org based on the content of their blog posts!

The "Possibly Related Classroom Projects” plugin makes it easy for blogger to connect their readers to relevant classroom projects in need of help. Seeing so many DonorsChoose.org classroom projects so relevant to blog posts on a wide variety of topics is truly a testament to the topical breadth of the projects posted by DonorsChoose.org teachers.

How have you helped students and teachers with our API?

If you have put our API to work, we would love to showcase your work!

Send us a note with the details and it'll be featured here in no time.  :)
